Reckless Getaway Review: Intense Driving Action

Loved Reckless Racing?  Then you'll probably be interested in its equally entertaining follow up: Reckless Getaway.

The game retains much of the beautiful graphics, smart visual style and light-footed physics system of the original title, even improving on them on some points.  Instead of racing, though, your goal is to evade capture by the police, causing a lot of mayhem along them way.

As far as story is concerned, there's really not any in Reckless Getaway.  You're simply the getaway driver for a crew who just committed a robbery, so you'll have to step on the gas and find a way to ditch the cops throughout all of the game's 16 levels.

Gameplay is simple: all you do is steer the vehicle (either by tilting the phone or using the virtual arrow buttons), with no concern whatsoever for accelerating or braking (yup, no brakes).  As you can tell, this makes for one seriously intense romp with non-stop action, making for an engrossing arcade experience.

You earn points by pulling off various stunts, like driving against traffic, launching off scattered jumps along the map, and leaving cops behind, all while you make your way to a finish line (reaching it ends the level).  The cleaner your getaway, the higher the points you get, so good driving is rewarded.

One thing to note: unlocking next levels usually involve earning certain amounts of stars for your driving.  If you finish a level, but drove poorly, you can be stuck having to repeat it before being able to move on.  The good news is, the levels all have plenty of replay value, so the second (or third or fourth…) time around will be just as fun.

As simple as Reckless Getaway sounds, it really is a lot of fun -- this, coming from someone who's not a big fan of mobile driving games.  You can get it from the App Store now, priced at $2.99.

Zombie Highway: A Driving Game…With Zombies

If there's anything we learned from the App Store, it's that there are innumerable ways to enjoy a zombie infestation.  Joining the iPhone's endless stream of undead treatments is Zombie Highway, a violently-amusing driving game with zombies galore.

You spend the game driving around post-apocalypse America in a car.  Instead of racing other drivers or avoiding obstacles, though, your goal is to just step on the gas, while zombies pop up from all over trying to stop you.

In Zombie Highway, you get seven varieties of the undead - from the skinny, underpowered ones to health-generating hulking types.  Evading them is easier said than done, as the mutants will literally work their asses off, trying to tip your car over.  They'll cling on to your vehicle, pilling in numbers, until you either manage to get them off or your car eventually topples to the side.

You can get rid of zombies by sideswiping them onto the many wrecked cars that litter the highway.  It takes more than one hit, though, as each zombie has its own health bar.  Fortunately, you've got an arms dealer friend riding with you, so you can use his stash of weapons to further damage your assailants.  New weapons are gradually unlocked the more you play.

Three things really stand out in the game: brilliant driving physics, aggressive zombie enemies and very crisp 3D graphics.  On the downside, sound effects are nearly non-existent - you'll likely just have as much enjoyment if you mute the damn game.

Overall, Zombie Highway makes for an addicting experience.  There's not much beyond the simple premise, but the execution is really engaging.  You can get it from the App Store for 99 cents.

Drift Mania Championship Pairs Great Physics With Solid Drift Controls

Drift Mania Championship, a new driving game in the App Store, brings a whole host of great things for a 99-cent title.  We're talking seriously good, to the point that it's easily one of the best driving titles I've seen in a mobile platform.

As the name implies, gameplay involves oversteering an onscreen car over challenging tracks, creating plenty of awesome stunts in the process.  With a great physics engine and a clever control system, it makes for an immensely fun game that can really suck you in for hours on end.

The accurate control system is a real highlight for Drift Mania.  You steer by tilting the phone, accelerate by sliding your thumb up and down on the right side of the display, and hand-brake using a button on the lower left corner.   Everything is done precisely, so you can do some crazy things once you get the hang of how the physics system interacts with your actions.

Only three race tracks are available in the game, with one car to start and four vehicles to unlock.  That's not much, but the replay value of each track is high, so it's all well and good.  Scores are computed by the speed of the vehicle and the length of your drifts, with additional points for style, combo drifts and other fancy stunts.

Game additions, such as tie-ins with the DMCC Drift League, great tunes, a replay feature and an online leaderboard (available from the Drift Mania website) make for a complete racing experience.  It's an impressively well-rounded game for the 99-cent price.

Volkswagen Think Blue Challenge Is A Driving Game That Makes You Drive…Economically?

Here's a game I never saw coming: a driving title where you're supposed to drive like a vigilant hypermiler. Yep, that's exactly what the unholy union of Volkswagen and Fish Labs turned out with the Volkswagen Think Blue Challenge, a game where the goal is make every last drop of your fuel count. Here's something even crazier - it's quite entertaining.

While the premise sounds silly, the challenge is not. It's one thing to delude yourself about your eco-friendly driving abilities when you're on the road. When you've got just a small amount of fuel to make it through checkpoints, though, it becomes a...gasp...game.

In Think Blue, you start the game with a small amount of gas and drive from one checkpoint to the next, getting a small amount of extra fuel for every one you clear. You complete checkpoints by correctly answering a question about efficient driving. Don't worry, if you drive even a little bit, you probably know the answers.

Once you've finished all checkpoints, you then begin driving your car on the open road. Make sure you apply every fuel efficiency trick up your sleeve, from coasting down slopes to managing your throttle to taking turns intelligently, allowing the vehicle to cover as much ground as possible before your tank goes empty. The game does help you out, suggesting how to maximize whatever's in your tank, going so far as to explain why each technique works. You will eventually run out of gas and when you do, the game submits how far you've driven to the online leaderboards, where you can see how you fare among the mass of iPhone-toting hypermilers around the world.

Volkswagen Think Blue Challenge is built upon the same engine as Fish Labs' Rally Master Pro 3D, so the graphics and the mechanics are all awesome. While it's not going to be the most exciting game in your library, it is quite addicting, especially once you see how far the top performers have gotten. Plus, you might even learn a new thing or two about technical driving. You can download the game for free from the App Store.
