Samsung Seek Brings Solid Messaging In A Compact Touchscreen QWERTY

The Samsung Seek is a compact touchscreen phone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a full roster of messaging capabilities. There's nothing particularly exceptional here, but it is a nice-looking mid-ranger with decent multimedia capabilities and social networking favors.

Physically, the phone is sturdy and well-made. The sliding mechanism works smoothly and locks in place with a good click. It has curvy sides, rounded corners and glossy plastic on the front panel. Dominating the front of the phone is a 2.6-inch resistive touchscreen display with 320 x 240 resolution. Despite the smaller size, it's particularly bright and sharp. The four-row QWERTY keyboard is small but roomy, with raised keys, making typing long messages quite comfortable.

As a phone, the Seek makes for impressive call quality, with hardly any interference finding its way. Voices sounded very natural on both ends of the conversations. Speakerphone didn't work as well, however. The mic seemed challenged in picking up voices clearly, so it was necessary to stay within a few inches of the handset when using it for calls. Battery life is rated at 5.8 hours of talk time and should be good for around two days of normal use.

It's got all the touchscreen phone basics handled, from an intuitive interface to a 600-entry phonebook to a selection of PIM tools. Messaging is the biggest selling point, though, and it packs in the works - SMS, MMS, IM and email (POP3, IMAP and corporate), with support for threaded messaging and a few other extra niceties. It offers social networking shortcuts for Twitter and Facebook too, but web connectivity is very slow, so we don't think you'll enjoy surfing with the full HTML browser too much.

Media playback is decent, however, and it has support for 32GB SD cards for loading all your favorite content. There's also GPS onboard and a 1.3 megapixel camera, which offers limited settings and average photo quality.

Overall, the Samsung Seek is a decent phone, especially if you're in the market for a messaging-capable touchscreen-QWERTY combination. Price is $29.99 with a two year data plan on Sprint, which sounds pretty nice.
