Samsung Jet: 800Mhz Processor, Sweeping Set Of Features

The Samsung Jet debuts with the claim of being the fastest full-touch cell phone in the world. That claim is bolstered by the handset's 800Mhz processor which no matter how you spin it, is easily the most powerful processor this side of feature phones.

That's right, by the way. Samsung chose to outfit a feature phone with the fastest processor they can find, which is an odd choice if I ever saw one. It does have some smart talents, though, which the manufacturer lovingly makes note of in their "smarter than a smartphone" marketing slogan.

With a processor like that, speed should be at the heart of the Jet. Unfortunately, the Symbian OS (not S60, by the way) running underneath doesn't quite match up to the hardware, effectively nullifying the marvelous speed gains we were all looking forward to.

Not that it isn't fast, far from it. It's just that any advantages in speed over other high-end touchscreen phones (e.g. iPhone 3GS) isn't exactly all that noticeable. From shifting between screens to loading the widgets to running apps, it pretty much performs like any regular high-end device.

With the speed argument out of the way, the Jet is a pretty impressive unit. The 3.1-inch 800 x 480 pixel display panel is bright and crisp, with excellent colors and good performance under sunlight. Since Samsung chose to use a resistive touchscreen (as they did with the well-done Tocco Ultra and Lite), it's not as responsive as it could have been with a capacitive unit. Regardless, the device runs in a pretty snappy manner, no doubt aided by Samsung's great UI implementation.

The Jet sports a pretty souped-up feature set, to go along with good quality voice and video calls. Chief among the talents is a tab-enabled (up to five tabs) web browser, which offers excellent performance over Wi-Fi and 3.2Mbps HSDPA, though far from being the fastest. On average, complex pages loaded in about double the time as they do on an iPhone 3GS. That's not a bad pace actually, considering you get to launch sites five tabs at a time.

A 5.0 megapixel camera module comes with the Jet and it performs pretty admirably. Both still shots and videos look above-average, based on camera phone standards. If there's any caveat, it's the fact that the shutter fosters an ultra-slow three-second lag. The onboard media player is highly capable, managing to handle all the usual audio and video formats, including MPEG-4, H.263 and DivX. There's also a built-in radio, Bluetooth and microSD card support up to 16GB.

In the current market, the Samsung Jet is most comparable to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. It's a faster, easier-to-use and better-implemented handset, though, making it a very attractive choice, especially with the competitive price.

Samsung now have so many touchphones under them right now. The Mhz figures will not be much of significance with the current set of applications, but in future with more demanding applications and smart phones becoming more advanced, its surely a step towards the future.
It will surely make the competitors to make faster phones.

I think its time for phone manufacturers to stop copying ihpone and come up with something that is actually better than iphone. Nokia, Samsung and LG are stuck trying to beat iphone where as on the other hand BlackBerry and Motorolla are actually making good OS sets which are better than iphone.

I think Samsung now has like 5 touch screen phones on the lines of iphone.

Samsung has suddenly brought out a line of touch screen phones. I don’t blame them, people seem to be wanting them as well.
The Samsung Jet seems to be very impressive with all those features and could easily be a better buy over Nokia 5800.

I recently had the chance to play around with the Samsung Jet. I really like the user interface and it was pretty snappy. The touch screen was pretty decent, but nothing like the iphone. It has a decent camera as well.
