Samsung Gravity 2 Is Another Affordable Messaging Phone With 3G And Full HTML Browsing

The Samsung Gravity 2 builds from the original Gravity, packing it with better features, sleeker form (not that it's all that sleek or anything) and a thinner design.  Sold for cheap with a good set of capabilities, it's easily one of the best-value messaging phones around.

As expected, the Gravity 2 comes with a full set of messaging talents, including SMS, MMS, IM, email and audio postcards.  It supports AIM, Yahoo and Windows Live out of the box,  along with a good range of email providers.  You can't just punch in POP3 and IMAP addresses as you want, though, so there are some limitations to what you can do.

Physically, it comes with a similar design as the original Gravity.  It sports two sets of keys, including a T9-style keypad in the front of the phone, with a side-sliding full QWERTY keyboard.   At only 0.6-inch thick, it's sufficiently-sized to fit in your pocket.   It comes with a good-quality display, with 320 x 240 resolution.   I, personally, find it a bit too small and positioned awkwardly when using the QWERTY panel.

As a phone, voice calls were excellent, with clear sound coming on both ends of the line.  The 3G speeds were fast, loading full HTML pages quickly and managing streaming videos without hitch (not the best quality, though).  Browser supports both Javascript and Flash, but doesn't offer the best controls (zooming and scrolling is a pain).

Unlike the original Gravity, this second iteration comes with a wide set of features.  Apart from 3G connectivity, it also comes with stereo Bluetooth, aGPS (using Telenav), a 2.0 megapixel camera (which takes average-quality stills) and microSDHC expansion.  It fits in an onboard media player too, but both options and file support are extremely basic.

Overall, the Samsung Gravity 2 offers a great feature set for a messaging phone.  Available for just $30 on contract, it's a great deal, if only for the 3G, HTML browsing and GPS alone.  Add in the good messaging support and you've got a very attractive package.
