Nokia 6700 Classic Review: Old-School Aesthetics Paired With Modern Features

If you're in the market for a basic phone with a solid camera module, the Nokia 6700 Classic handily makes the case. Laden with spiffy good looks and a stunning finish, it's a very attractive package that slips easily in your pocket.

The standout feature for the 6700 is a 5.0 megapixel camera module, set against a backdrop of otherwise entry-level handset sensibilities. It comes with a LED flash that, unfortunately, isn't all that bright, barely improving indoor shots. Shutter button is highly responsive (perhaps to a fault) and overall shot performance is very swift.

In well-lighted conditions, the camera manages very good photos with bright colors and sufficient detail. Compared to Nokia's more expensive phones that tout better lenses, however, it pales a tad in comparison. Still, there are very few entry-level phones that can manage stills as good as the 6700, so there's really little room to complain.

Video capture is also available, ably recording VGA resolution clips at 15 fps. The best setting, however, is the 362 x 288 pixels, which provide smoother action at 30fps and will likely work better for web sharing.

Physically, the 6700 is a snappy-looking device. While the design is decidedly a few years into the past, both build and finish are very well-executed. It sports a pocketable 109.8 x 45 x 11.2mm dimensions and only weighs a light 116.5 grams.

The small 2.2-inch screen has a relatively generous 320 x 240 resolution, allowing for sharp and clear display. It runs the Symbian S40 UI with little customizations, so it should be familiar to longtime Nokia users.

Calls on this handset are very good on both ends of the conversation. The same holds true for SMS, which is fueled by Nokia's tried-and-tested T9 system. Data access is similarly pleasant, as the phone supports 3G speeds, allowing it access to numerous broadband services.

Despite the "basic phone" reputation, the 6700 packs a good amount of features, including an onboard GPS (with Nokia Maps), HTML browsing, some basic media playback, Bluetooth and microSD card expansion. You can download numerous apps for the handset from Nokia's Ovi Store, including ones for various social media services, such as Facebook and Myspace. While it won't be as extensible as a smartphone, there's a decent amount of content available for it.

Despite looking like a phone from five years ago, the Nokia 6700 Classic comes with a number of features that make it relevant to today's market, particularly the generous camera module and 3G connectivity. Add to that the potential for expansion via apps from the Ovi Store (though not a lot at the moment), it's a pretty good handset for your consideration.

The looks are kind of deceiving. While the phone appears to be old school, the features are not. It has 3G and includes a 5MP camera as well. However it is priced a little higher for an S40 phone.
