iPhone 3.0 OS Coming Soon, Big Changes Expected

Apple just sent out invitations for its March 17 event for the iPhone 3.0 OS, where they will also be showing off the updated SDK.  Obviously, they're hoping to rain on Palm Pre's parade and we're anticipating this update will see some serious changes.

For one, I'm envisioning a new UI.  After Palm Pre's very impressive demo of its interface during CES, there's really little choice for Apple but to refresh their look or risk losing some favor from those enthralled by the Pre's excellent user experience.

According to rumors, the new OS will finally have MMS and Tethering (via Bluetooth and USB), although nothing's still being bandied around about Copy-And-Paste.  Seriously, Apple, it's version 3.0 in 2009 - don't you think we all deserve copy-paste now?

I'm almost sure we'll see the new OS borrow some elements from Palm Pre (multi-tasking gestures, background apps, non-intrusive notifications) and HTC (webOS, "people-centric" functions).  Personally, I'd like improved speed (though I suspect we'll have to buy new hardware for this), bulk delete across all apps, flash support inside browsers and mobile versions of iLife and iWork.

As it has been with Apple's history, expect a hardware refresh using OS 3.0 around June or July.  With the Pre also scheduled to roll out around that time, it looks like we'll have an interesting head-to-head to look forward to.

Phone Blog will keep you updated with the latest.
